In this exclusive interview with Amy Kirchen, the visionary designer and stylist shares her creative journey. From reimagining Goodwill finds to designing for the red carpet, Amy reveals her passion for sustainable fashion, empowering clients, and shaping a timeless, bold, and purposeful future in the fashion industry.
Could you share your journey into the fashion industry? What inspired you to become a designer and stylist?
My journey started at a very young age. I grew up sewing, and from that point, I knew I wanted to be a fashion designer. I would go to Goodwill, buy old garments, and deconstruct them to create something new. This hands-on approach gave me the foundation I needed to understand design and materials. Over the years, my passion evolved, and I eventually turned that passion into a career.
What is your design philosophy when creating custom pieces for clients?
When working with clients, I design based on their personality and lifestyle needs. Fashion is such a personal experience, and I always aim to create garments that reflect who they are and how they want to feel. It’s not just about the look but also about the connection we build throughout the process. I love creating long-lasting relationships and friendships with each of my clients.
How do you approach personal shopping and closet makeovers for your clients? What is the most common request you receive?
I approach personal shopping and closet makeovers with an eye for curating a wardrobe that’s both functional and inspiring. I take the time to understand their lifestyle, preferences, and what’s missing in their wardrobe. The most common request I receive is for timeless pieces that are versatile yet have a touch of individuality.
Can you walk us through your creative process when designing a new collection?
My creative process starts with analyzing future trends and incorporating classic styles that remain relevant. I aim to design pieces that stand the test of time—garments that women will continue to wear for years. Sustainability plays a huge role in my designs, and I prioritize using flattering fabrics and cuts that enhance the shape and confidence of every woman. From there, I add a touch of edge to make the collection unique.
How has your experience been as a creative director? Could you share some highlights?
Being a Creative Director has been an exciting challenge. I’m responsible for bringing the brand’s vision to life, not only through designs but also through imagery and campaigns. One highlight has been my role with Ape Season, particularly with my upcoming collaboration. It’s incredibly rewarding to shape a brand and push creative boundaries.
What trends do you see emerging in women’s fashion for 2025?
Animal prints are set to dominate, with interpretations like zebra, cowhide, and snakeskin, but all in sustainable, artificial materials. I also see bold patterns expanding alongside sleek, minimalist looks. It’s going to be an exciting mix of rebellious energy and refined elegance.
What advice would you give to aspiring designers looking to establish themselves in the fashion industry?
My advice would be to stick to your point of view (POV) and stay true to yourself. It’s a tough industry to break into, but persistence is key. Don’t let the challenges discourage you—keep pushing until you achieve your goals.
How important is community engagement to you, and what initiatives have you been involved in to support local businesses or budding designers?
Community engagement is extremely important to me. I believe in the power of collaboration and synergy. In Vegas, I’ve worked to foster style and purpose, connecting with local designers and businesses. I live by the principle “Iron sharpens iron” and truly believe that by supporting each other, we all grow.
Can you share any memorable experiences you’ve had while styling or designing for high-profile clients or events?
One of the most memorable experiences of my career was showing at New York Fashion Week. I’ve also had the incredible opportunity to create gowns for A-list celebrities. Styling high-profile clients for events and seeing them wear my designs on the red carpet is always a surreal moment that reminds me why I love what I do.
What does a typical day look like for you as a designer and stylist?
My days are never the same! They could involve working on a brand campaign, directing a photo shoot, styling a client, or attending social events. The pace is fast, and I’m constantly moving between creative projects, client work, and team collaborations.
What are some of your personal style staples that you believe every woman should have in her wardrobe?
I believe every woman should have a classic trench coat, a great pair of tailored pants, a little black dress, and a pair of comfortable yet stylish heels. These are pieces that can be dressed up or down and form the foundation of any wardrobe. I also swear by vintage finds—there’s something so unique and timeless about them.
What are your future goals for your brand and your magazine?
My goal for my brand is to continue pushing the envelope by offering timeless yet edgy designs while keeping sustainability at the forefront. For the magazine, I’m excited to build Vegas2LA into something extraordinary—what I call “Vegas Vogue.” It’s about telling the stories of industry leaders, local heroes, and inspiring others through a global lens.
Are there any upcoming projects or collaborations that you’re particularly excited about?
I’m thrilled about the upcoming Ape Season X AK collaboration, which combines the energy of streetwear with a refined, sophisticated edge. Additionally, I’m excited about my role as co-publisher for Vegas2LA Magazine. It’s a new chapter, and I’m looking forward to curating meaningful content that resonates with both local and global audiences. I’ll also be rolling out couture pieces under the Ape Season brand.
